The Modern and the Lone Star Film Society join forces again this summer to offer a special selection of creative films for children ages three and up. Take a break from the Texas heat and join us for The 2013 Modern Kids - Summer Flicks Series! Share the art of the screen with your children through these delightful and innovative films. Schedule of Films: August 13 10:30 am – 11 am (Ages 3–7)ROBOT ZOT! (8 min), MAX’S WORDS (10 min), STREGA NONA (9 min) ROBOT ZOT! (8 min, Sciezska) This is the tale of a quixotic robot determined to conquer the earth. But once he discovers the princess…a toy cell phone…his mission takes a new course. Robot Zot must learn how to be a hero -- in the name of true love. MAX’S WORDS (10 min, Fott & Hunt) When his brothers won’t share their collections of stamps and coins, Max starts a collection of his own, made up of words. One word leads to another, and suddenly Max discovers he has a story worth telling – and sharing! STREGA NONA (9 min, dePaola) Strega Nona’s meddling assistant Big Anthony is determined to prove to the townspeople his knowledge of the magic secrets contained in the pasta pot of Strega Nona. In so doing, he unleashes a torrent of pasta, which threatens to engulf their little Italian town. 1 pm – 2 pm (Ages 8–12) BELOW (3 min, Price) In the harsh winter weather a man fishing for his food is pulled into a dangerous situation, only to be saved by an unlikely, smiling creature. This beautiful stop motion animation lends emotion to otherwise inanimate objects. Created by Kirsten Lepore. WING (5 min, Grevil, Madsen, Kirkegaard & Bech) A solitary, one winged creature called Wing is harassed by a group of oppressive crows due to being different. FOLKSONGS & BALLADS (8 min, Vernerie, Defachelles & Paul) A contemplative and meditative look at a day in the life of a fisherman preparing for his work. Created by Mathieu Vernerie, Pauline Defachelles, and Rémy Paul. HOLY SHEEP (2 min, Farris) The story of a shepherd who can’t get his sheep to stay put. Created by Justin Farris. HELMET (4 min, Bamford) A space explorer investigates a mysterious ladder found in the desert of a faraway planet. Created by Jen Bamford. PIGEON: IMPOSSIBLE (6 min, Martell) A rookie secret agent is faced with a problem seldom covered in basic training: what to do when a curious pigeon gets trapped inside your multi-million dollar, government-issued nuclear briefcase. Created by Lucas Martell. GIRL AND ROBOT (4 min, Jakobsen, Haunstrup, Wallmark, & Reese) An impatient girl takes on the task of building a robot. Can she complete it without destroying her own creation? Created by Mads Dam Jakobsen, Kenneth Haunstrup, Nils Henric Wallmark, and Slaven Reese at the Animation Workshop. 3,000 ACRES (9 min, Cater) On 3,000 Acres, a young boy, trained in the art of auctioneering explores the ranch he loves and allows the audience to walk a day in his boots. The director will be in attendance to answer questions about the making of the film. August 14th 10:30 am – 11 am (Ages 3–7) ART (6 min), THE BEAST OF MONSIEUR RACINE (9 min), TOO MANY TOYS (11 min) ART (6 min, Bronzit) Art, a young boy, joyfully draws scribbles that squiggle, splotches with blotches, zigs and zags, doodles and dogs, and so much more! Children are introduced to the imaginative world of art and how a picture really can be worth a thousand words. THE BEAST OF MONSIEUR RACINE (9 min, Deitch) A suspicious pear-thieving beast becomes fast friends with a lonely man who proudly presents him to the prestigious Academy of Sciences TOO MANY TOYS (11 min, Shannon) Spencer has too many toys! His father trips over them, his mother falls over them, and the house is overflowing with junk. Now its time to give some of the mountain of goodies away, but Spencer finds it hard. In the end, he fills a box, but decides the one toy he can't part with is the box! 1 pm – 2 pm (Ages 8–12) PROFILOGRAPH (AFTER DÜRER) (2 min, Garcia) Studies in male profiles, from Albrecht Dürer’s Four Books On Human Proportion is transformed by Pablo Garcia’s method of Profilography in this incredible example of progressive artistic techniques. Created by Pablo Garcia. FRANKIE RULEZ!!! (5 min, Charoenchal) Frankie, a space alien looking to conquer the galaxy one mysterious planet at a time. Created by San Charoenchal. WILL (5 min, E. In a world where sounds take form and develop the mood of the world, a man struggles with his odd sound. EL VENDEDOR DE HUMO (THE SMOKE SELLER) (7 min, Maestro) A young salesman arrives in a sleepy town where what he has to sell may be less than the citizens are hoping for. Directed by Jaime Maestro at the Primer Frame School of Animation. CAN WE BE HAPPY NOW (3 min, Gehm) A man in a grey, drab world is awakened to the beauty and happiness of the real world around him, as the spirits of nature take him on an adventure. Created by Tahnee Gehm at CalArts. SWELTER (3 min, Streilein) In a future world, a man and his son travel through the incredible heat looking for water and a way to survive. Created by Jacob Streilein at CalArts. CRAYON DRAGON (3 min, Pantoja) A girl is commissioned to paint over an old concrete illustration, in which to her surprise, she sinks into. ONE DAY IN MY SCHOOL (13 min, Li) This film explores the personality of a young girl who is being homeschooled by her parents. Young Ana Maria takes part in learning why her parents have decided to take control of her education. The director will be in attendance to answer questions about the making of the film. August 15th 10:30 am – 11 am (Ages 3–7) LON PO PO (10 min), LEONARDO, THE TERRIBLE MONSTER (8 min), ALL THE WORLD (8min) LON PO PO (10 min, Young) In this Chinese version of the classic fairy tale, a mother leaves her three children home alone while she goes to visit their grandmother. When the children are visited by a wolf, pretending to be their Po Po, or granny, they let him in the house, but ultimately are not fooled by his deep voice and hairy face. Combining ancient Chinese panel art techniques with a contemporary palette of watercolors and pastels, this powerful story brings lessons about strangers, trust and courage to a new generation. LEONARDO, THE TERRIBLE MONSTER (8 min, Willems) Leonardo is terrible at being a monster. He can’t seem to frighten anyone. Then he comes up with a plan to find the perfect nervous little boy and scare the tuna salad out of him. Will his plan succeed, or will he come up with a better idea? ALL THE WORLD (8 min, Fott) This story follows a circle of family and friends over the course of a day -- from morning till night. The importance of all things great and small in our world, from the tiniest shell on the beach…to warm family connections…to the widest sunset sky…is affirmed. 1 pm– 2 pm (Ages 8–12) THE PRINCESS WHO NEVER SMILED (3 min, S. Lee) The story of a king who only wants to make his unhappy daughter smile. Created by Sun Jae Lee at CalArts. PLUG (3 min, E. Lee) A young boy experiences the colorful world of Jazz. Created by Eusong Lee at CalArts. HUM (9 min, Pederson) The small turntable headed robot ‘Hum’ sits left alone in an old workshop, where he decides to create a friend to have fun with. STORY OF A NICE GIRL (4 min, Yi) A personal insight into the life of the director, who struggles with asserting herself, and strives to learn how to keep from being “too nice.” Created by Jean Yi. HUNT (2 min, Price) This animation uses watercolor and ballpoint pen to create a beautiful 2D depiction of a tiger’s hunt. Created by Taylor Price. ON THE WATER (8 min, Zhao) Follow the migration of a group of characters traveling on the water, and their struggle for safe passage. Created by Yi Zhao. OUT OF THE ORDINARY (8 min, Kinnerup) A middle-aged man lives a life of routines, clinging to a long desired promotion, until the day his computer and coffee machine decide that there is need for change. Directed by Tommy Kinnerup at the Animation Workshop. DAYS WITHOUT ACCIDENTS (2 min, Latzko) A man and a woman spend their days monitoring the status of a huge robot, day after day, their lives are focused on reaching the next one without an accident. Created by Theresa Latzko. PHOTOS IN THE WIND (15 min, Hoekzema) This short documentary follows the citizens of Joplin, Missouri, who have collected thousands of photos that were scattered during the storm and hope to return the lost memories to their rightful owners. The director will be in attendance to answer questions about the making of the film. Films are shown in the auditorium at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Admission is free and open to the public. Seating is limited to the first 250 guests. The age ranges listed below are recommendations. Gallery admission is free for film attendees and adult chaperone on the day of the film.
