You are invited to a very special closing reception of Hibbleton's current show “Philip K Dick in Orange County” on Saturday, May 30, 2015 from 7-10pm. This event will feature artist and curator talks, and is also your last chance to see this amazing and educational exhibit about one of Orange County's most famous and important authors. Here's a little info about PKD and Orange County... Philip K. Dick is known for his trippy/dystopian stories and novels, many of which have been made into films—like Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report, A Scanner Darkly, etc. What is less well-known is the fact that he spent the last years of his life living in Orange County. He had an apartment in Fullerton! Dick’s last six novels (written roughly between 1970-1982) are set mainly in Orange County, and they offer an insightful and disturbing portrait of an ultra-conservative, paranoid, Nixon-era 1970s OC and America. These novels are: 1.) Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said: Set in a dystopian police state, a famous television talk show host wakes up to find his identity has been erased from the government’s vast databases—putting his life in danger! 2.) A Scanner Darkly: Set in the suburban neighborhoods of Orange County, a narcotics officer is asked to spy on a new target: himself! 3.) Radio Free Albemuth: A former record store clerk from Berkeley begins having divine revelations which compel him to move down to Orange County, where he learns of a vast intergalactic/cosmic war between good and evil! 4.) VALIS: Based on Philip K. Dick’s own experiences while living in Fullerton, VALIS tells the story of a man who begins having what he thinks are divine transmissions beamed to his head from a distant star. This novel, called by some his masterpiece, is a passionate mediation on science, religion, and the price of inspiration. 5.) The Divine Invasion: The second book in the VALIS trilogy. After the fall of Masada in 74 AD, God, or “Yah” is exiled from Earth and forced to take refuge in the CY30-CY30B star system. Meanwhile, the people of Earth are ruled by Belial the spirit of darkness, but Yah is intent on reclaiming his creation. 6.) The Transmigration of Timothy Archer. Dick’s final novel. Set in the late 1960s and 1970s, the story describes the efforts of Bishop Timothy Archer, who must cope with the theological and philosophical implications of the newly discovered Gnostic Zadokite scroll fragments. We invited artists and writers to read these novels and create + submit artwork and/or writing (essays, poetry, comics, etc.) based on them for a gallery exhibit and corresponding zine release in May of 2015.
